FAQs

The Port of Bay City Authority has aquired approxamately 100 acres just east of Matagorda Harbor between the Intracoastal Canal and South Gulf Road (known locally as "Cemetery Road") for use in the construction of an industrial barge terminal. The Port has completed engineering plans and permitting for the facility. Please contact our office at 979-245-5831 for more information.

Matagorda is an unincorporated town, so there is no city government. The County Commissioners have some jurisdiction. See www.co.matagorda.tx.us

The Colorado River Locks (the only locks in Texas) are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. See http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/BusinessWithUs/OperationsDivision/ColoradoRiverLocksSummary.aspx for more information.

The rehabilitation of the Colorado Jetties at Matagorda was completed in early 2011. The work included the construction of a new east jetty and a major dredging. The channel is now 200 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

Matagorda Island is a Texas Wildlife Management Area (WMA) across the ICW from Port O'Connor to the south, and is accessed by boat. Visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife for more information.

Matagorda Lighthouse is on Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area, and information about it can be found at the State Parks web site.
